Arts Inside Out
In partnership with WOCA members and their affiliated organizations, this series dissects artistic work from inception to stage through the lens of the artist and arts administrator. Guided conversation with both artists and administrator helps deconstruct the process of artistic creation and development, fundraising, marketing, outreach, production and audience and donor cultivation.
Brown Bag Professional Development Series
WOCA’s Brown Bag Professional Development Series was designed to provide a platform to develop and strengthen the skills necessary to excel in today’s workplace. The series encompasses all types of facilitated learning opportunities including panel discussions, open forums and featured speakers. Session topics are generated by WOCA’s needs assessment survey findings. Past series topics have included Networking and Strategic Partnerships and Challenges and Opportunities in Arts Management. The professional development sessions are hosted at WOCA member organizations.
Career Panels: Women in the Arts
This annual event showcases women professionals, their careers, and their contributions to the field, and is produced in partnership with The Apollo Theater Education Department during Women’s History Month. Past events have included Women in Dance and Women in Hip-Hop.
This program identifies and illustrates resources and strategies for building successful collaborations and exchanges between African administrators and artists and U.S.-based arts administrators. Expanding on the model and legacy of Africa Exchange, a program started by some of WOCA’s more senior members in the mid-1990s, the objective is to reinvigorate partnerships and cultural exchange between the African continent and The United States through the lens of people of color, and build a sustainable network between arts administrators/cultural workers in Africa and The United States.
Leadership Through Mentorship Initiative
WOCA’s Leadership Through Mentorship Initiative is a program which pairs emerging and mid-level administrators with more senior members across the field with the explicit purpose of cultivating long-term professional investment and self-sustainability for women of color in the field. The leadership program is aimed exclusively at cultivating leaders of color, addressing their specific needs as marginalized people in the field, while imparting tools to help facilitate an environment of equity in their personal work practices and at their respective cultural organizations.
Town Hall: State of the (Dis)Union
Held in partnership with and facilitated by WOCA members, these public forums are discussion-based yet solution-driven, addressing issues that directly impact the vitality of our communities. The forums are poised to use the arts as an anchor and as a tool for critical conversation around social issues that are affecting mass populations like cultural landscaping, gentrification, access to quality education, mass incarceration and economic inequities.
Aimed at developing fundamental skills and dissecting bigger picture issues in the field, webinars are facilitated by professionals with diverse perspectives delving into everything from fundraising and board management to self-advocacy and managing the work/life balance.
Women’s Leadership Forum
This annual forum addresses pressing issues pertaining to women such as bias, work/life balance and identity in the workplace. A through-line in the discussion will be centered on the intersectionality of race and gender. The inaugural 2017 forum, Leveraging Leadership: Addressing Bias in the Arts, is to be held during the annual APAP (Association for Performing Arts Presenters) conference and will unpack implicit, inherent and unconscious gender and racial bias, focusing on the challenges and success faced by all female leaders in the field.
