'Til The Street Lights Come On

In an attempt to reclaim a cultural space left vacant since the end of an annual city-wide competition at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in the early 80s, redefine the meaning of “high art,” and center the magic of black and brown women, Women of Color in the Arts, in association with the National Double Dutch League, presented ‘Til The Street Lights Come On, a two-day event as part of Lincoln Center Out of Doors, highlighting the urban tradition of double dutch and celebrating the women of color that helped pioneer the sport and set its course to becoming an international phenomenon influencing both art and culture.
The inaugural program held on July 29-30, 2017 featured demonstrations, inter-generational jump-ins, panel discussions, an oral history project, a film screening and photo exhibition, a culminating concert merging double dutch and hip-hop featuring the empowering Momma’s Hip Hop Kitchen, and the seminal competition, the Double Dutch Summer Classic.
